Hurricane Rina Strengthens In The Atlantic


Hurricane Rina formed earlier this week. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC),  Rina has now become a category 2 hurricane. It has sustained winds of 100 MPH.  It is the 6th hurricane formed in the Atlantic Ocean this hurricane season.  Satellite imagery provided by NASA, shows the menacing storm.

The NHC has provided with a  five-day forecast. As shown below Florida is on the path of the storm.

Rain Brings Texas and Florida Power Outages


Coastal regions such as Florida and Houston, Texas were hit by heavy rains in the beginning of the month of October. The bad weather has left thousands of residents without power. In Houston, Texas more than 5,000 customers were left without power this past weekend. In Florida, 3,450 residents of Miami-Dade and Broward County lost power the first week of October.

An article published by ABC for Houston residents, discusses how “CenterPoint says more than 5,000 of its customers were without lights in the Houston area Sunday evening. Most of the outages were centered southeast of Rosenberg, which saw some of the hardest rain.”

The Miami Herald reports how Florida residents in the southern counties lost power due to a brief but heavy storm on Friday. An FP&L spokesman, Mayco Villafana, stated: “There were a lot of scattered high winds,’’ Villafana said. “A lot of vegetation hit the lines and wires came down.’’
